New home gifts they will still have in ten years

A short list with one rule for entry: something they could still have in ten years.

Thoughtful ornaments begin with a few specific choices.

My rule for a housewarming gift is simple: choose something that could still belong to the home in ten years. An address or year ties it to this particular move. I would begin with the address ornament, then look at engraved boards, house sketches, and a few useful things for the entryway.

The address ornament

The one I would bring. It carries the address and the year of the move, then appears again when the Christmas boxes are opened. Realtors ordering closing gifts can use the bulk section near the end.

If they might move again: name and year

For renters, first apartments, and anyone likely to move again, the family name and year travels more easily than the address. It still reads correctly on the next tree, in the next place.

The rest of the ten-year list

  • An engraved cutting board. The other classic that carries a date, and one that actually gets used.
  • A framed sketch or watercolor of the house. The splurge option, and one that can sit beside the family photographs rather than disappear into Christmas storage.
  • A decent key dish for the entry table. Inexpensive, and used every single day.
  • A tree for the yard, if there is one. The only gift on this list that gets bigger every year.

What did not make the list: scented things, unless you know their taste. Doormats, which wear out on schedule. And anything in the live-laugh-love family.

For the couple who just moved in together

Moving in together brings boxes, duplicate kitchen tools, and decisions about whose sofa fits. A two-names-one-address ornament can mark the shared place. A frame can hold photographs of the two old front doors side by side. A good knife or pan can serve the new kitchen without taking sides about whose furniture made the cut.

If you are the realtor

If you close twenty houses a year, gifts become a system, and the dated ornament with the client's name works well as one. It is personal without being intimate, and the gift box is a reasonable place for your branding. From 25 pieces this is a bulk order, and winter runs need to start by November 21.

Seasonal reminders

Three emails a year. That's the whole list.
