The clearest recent portrait will print well. The old school photograph, first apartment snapshot, or blurry picture from a trip may carry more of the friendship. If the older image is small, scan the original print at high resolution rather than enlarging a copy saved from social media.
A two-sided ornament can hold “then” on one side and “now” on the other. Keep the crop similar so the faces line up when the ornament turns. Add the names and year at the edge or on the back rather than printing across the photograph.

Use the joke, but keep the joke yours
A line that makes both of you laugh can turn a simple ornament into the obvious choice. It may be a badly translated menu, a name for an old car, the sentence one of you says before every trip, or a reference to the year you survived together. The wording does not need to entertain anyone else.
Keep it short enough to read. If the joke needs a paragraph of setup, use the object or place behind it instead: a tiny camper, coffee cup, concert ticket, dog silhouette, or outline of the city where it happened.
