Best Friend Ornaments

A long friendship leaves a trail of apartments, haircuts, trips, borrowed clothes, and photographs that become funnier as the years pass. Choose one image, place, or line that belongs to the two of you. The rest of the history comes with it.

A matching pair lets the same detail hang on two trees. I like that idea for friends who now spend Christmas in different cities: the objects match, but each gathers its own family ornaments around it.

The photograph can come from the beginning

The clearest recent portrait will print well. The old school photograph, first apartment snapshot, or blurry picture from a trip may carry more of the friendship. If the older image is small, scan the original print at high resolution rather than enlarging a copy saved from social media.

A two-sided ornament can hold “then” on one side and “now” on the other. Keep the crop similar so the faces line up when the ornament turns. Add the names and year at the edge or on the back rather than printing across the photograph.

Which year belongs on a friendship ornament?

Use the year you met with “friends since” or “est.” when that date is part of the story. Use the current year when the ornament marks a trip, reunion, move, or this particular Christmas. If neither of you remembers the exact beginning, do not manufacture an anniversary. Names and “Christmas 2026” are complete.

Use the joke, but keep the joke yours

A line that makes both of you laugh can turn a simple ornament into the obvious choice. It may be a badly translated menu, a name for an old car, the sentence one of you says before every trip, or a reference to the year you survived together. The wording does not need to entertain anyone else.

Keep it short enough to read. If the joke needs a paragraph of setup, use the object or place behind it instead: a tiny camper, coffee cup, concert ticket, dog silhouette, or outline of the city where it happened.

For friends who live far apart

A map can join two cities with a line, heart, or pair of coordinates. Put one name near each place, or keep the map unlabeled and use the cities below. Check the direction and spelling; a decorative map is still personal enough that a misplaced pin will be noticed.

Matching ornaments do not have to be identical. One can show the place you met and the other the place you each live now, joined by the same phrase, year, material, or ribbon. That feels more like a friendship that has moved than a copied set.

One ornament each, or one shared gift

Order two when the idea is that the same friendship appears on both trees. One ornament is right when the photograph, drawing, or memory belongs especially in your friend’s home. Decide before personalizing, because a pair should use the same name order and date unless the design intentionally gives each friend a side.

A going-away gift can use the year of the move and the two cities. A reunion ornament can use the place and current year. A quiet “I saw this and thought of us” gift needs only the names and a detail the friend will recognize.

Choose a material that fits the memory

Ceramic suits photographs and colorful travel artwork. Engraved wood fits names, maps, and quiet inside references. Metal is light enough to mail and gives a photograph a thin profile. Glass works with short script and catches light beautifully, but needs the most careful packaging when the pair is going to two addresses.
