What to write around the family

Use the family surname only when everyone in the design shares or uses it. First names and the year are more flexible for blended families, unmarried couples, grandparents, and households with more than one surname. “Our Christmas at Home” can hold the group together without asking one name to represent everybody.

Giving one without checking the group chat

A family ornament is unforgiving of a missed name. Confirm every spelling, count the pets, and check whether a dog has joined or died since the last Christmas card. If you cannot verify the household, use a photograph supplied by someone in it rather than assembling the family from memory.

For grandparents, a design with the adult children, grandchildren, and dogs may need more space than one ornament offers. A pair can work better: one household per ornament, joined by the same material, year, or ribbon.

Choose the surface by the kind of portrait

Ceramic suits a family photograph or full-color illustrated figures. Wood works with engraved names, houses, stockings, and simple outlines. Metal is light for a larger piece with many names. Check the finished dimensions and preview the smallest lettering, especially on a design for six or more figures.
